Chapter 4.

Chapter 4.

When Mom came in my room to wake me up in the morning, I was already up picking out my clothes for the day.
“Oh. Your up. Well, I’m going back to bed. I don’t have to be up for another three hours. Have a good first day honey.” she mumbled as she closed my door. I glanced at my clock, I had an hour and a half before Benjamin would be here.
So, I jumped into a quick shower and got out pretty fast, too. He quickly dried my hair and straightened it. I threw on some makeup and went into my room. I threw on my outfit, which consisted of a cute pair of blue jeans and a yellow polo with a blue tank top underneath. I threw on a yellow bead necklace. I decided to wear my pair of wallabies.
By the time I had brushed my teeth and thrown on some last minute makeup, the doorbell rang.
“Coming” I yelled out.
I grabbed my backpack and my water bottle and ran to the door and answered it. Benjamin stood there looking more preppy than usual. But it was still a good look for him.
“You about ready?” he asked.
“As ready as I’ll ever be.” I said, closing the door behind me.
The car ride was full of chatter on where everything was, and what teachers to avoid and the best way to get around the school, and things along that line.
Soon, we pulled into the parking lot of the school. God, I was nervous. I had butterflies in the pit of my stomach, as I got out of the car and walked into the doors of my new school.
It wasn’t what I imagined it to be. It was larger than what I had pictured, it was really open. Benjamin and I walked into the lunchroom and sat down with some of the people I met that night at the theater. Some people I didn’t recognize, though.
“Hey Ben! Who’s this?” asked a boy with blonde flippy hair, walking towards us.
“I’m Stacey” I said, smiling.“Bonjour, Mademoiselle. I’m Tucker, but call me Tuck.” he said with a big smile on his face.
“Nice to meet you Tuck.”
“The pleasure is all mine.” he said again with that big smile.
Then the bell rang. It was time for first period. I hadn’t met anyone with the same first period as me, so there was no one to show me where the room was. But I thought I had an idea of where it was. Until I ended up n the other end of the school. The bell had just rung, and I was so confused on where I was. I tried to fine the office, but that didn’t work either. I thought I was going to be lost for forever until I ran into a familiar face. It was Delilah. She, thank God, had the same first period class as I did. So we walked together.
I had Math first. I was glad, that meant that it was out of the way for the rest of the day. Then, I had art. Delilah, too, had art second period. Unfortunately, she didn’t have the same third period as me, but she showed me where it was. I got to my reading class and who was sitting there nest to the only open desk left. It was Chance.
God, Chance looks so beautiful in the dimmed light of the classroom.
But who was I kidding? He couldn’t stand me. He made that pretty clear.
But he was going to have to get over that, because I was going to be sitting by him for the year.
He wasn’t the only familiar face in the class, I saw Whitney sitting in her desk, looking at herself in a little mirror that she pulled out of her purse.
Chance, I thought, hadn’t seen me yet. That was until, Whitney yelled out,
“Oh my gosh, Stacey! I cant believe we have a class together! Come over here and sit down.” she said, now switching places with a boy so she could sit next to me.
Then Chance looked up. He stared at me with those oh-so gorgeous blue eyes.
He looked at me as though I was a ghost. The fear in his eyes seems to take me off guard. Well, it wasn’t so much fear, but what looked like a hatred. So, I hurried to my seat, passing him a fast as I could. When I sat down, I saw that he was eyeing me. So, I flipped my hair to the side, so I couldn’t see his face any longer.
That was the longest fifty minutes of my life. I just wanted to hurry up and get out of there when the bell rang. But it hit me, why on earth was he mad at me? What had I done to make him dislike me so much? Nothing. I have done absolutely nothing. I have to get to the bottom of this.
So, when the bell rang I stood up in front of him and didn’t budge.
“You are kind of in my way. I have to t my next class.” he said, trying to find away around me.
“Not until you tell me why you hate me so much.” I said simply.
“Why I ha- I don’t hate you. Why would you think that?” he still looked for a way around where I stood, as if he was in a hurry.
“Then why are you treating me this way?” I asked.
“And what way would that be?” he asked. He was no longer trying to work his way around me.
“The way you stare at me. You have so much angry in your eyes.” I said.
Then he just stood there. No longer trying to sneak past. It was like he was figuring something out in his head. He just stared into my eyes. And I was suddenly sucked into a trace. This has been happening a lot lately. But as hard as I tried, I couldn’t avert my eyes.
“Meet me outside the office after school today. I’ll try to explain it then”. he said finally.
“Okay.” I moved from his path and he darted out of the room. I hurried after him, but once I reached the hall, he was gone. As if he had disappeared into thin air.
For the rest of the school day I went through my classes. When lunch finally came I was relieved. This was the half marker for my day. My day was half over. I was one step closer to finding out what was up with Chance and why he was so weird around me. I hurried to get in line in the cafeteria, and find a place to sit. Luckily, I knew a bunch of people to sit with. I started walking over to the table where Benjamin and Whitney and Delilah were.
As I was walking I past the table where Chance and Shannon were sitting, I could feel his eyes staring at me. I hurried over to the table and sat down. As soon as I did, Whitney started blabbering on about how she hated driving all the way to Seattle to get a manicure and how they should have a nail place here in town. I wasn’t really listening though.
When she finally stopped talked about how the nail place she went to gave her a crappy nail job, I asked her a couple questions about Chance.
“So, what’s up with that Chance guy?” I asked
“Oh, the hot one over there?” and she pointed over to his table. “There’s nothing really to tell. His family has lived here longer than any of us have. And they are filthy rich because him and Shannon’s mom is some surgeon.”
I glanced over at him. He was watching our table out of the corner of his eye.
“Does he have a girlfriend” I asked, still staring at him.
He looked up and turned his full glance over to me. Had he heard me ask?
“No. I don’t think he finds any of the girls here pretty enough for his taste.” she said. She sounded kind of mad. I wondered I he had turned her down, but I wasn’t going to ask.
“Oh? Why would you say that?” I asked.
“Just something I have noticed. I mean, he has never had a girlfriend here.” she said matter-of-factly.
The whole time, my attention was focused on him. He was absolutely radiant. He was like a dream. So perfect. There were so many things I didn’t understand about him, but that didn’t make a difference on how beautiful he was. Plus, I was going to get answers soon enough, only two more periods.
Those two last periods went by so slow. Benjamin was in both of them, and he gabbed my ears off the whole time. He was really sweet, but he was so dull. I wasn’t even really paying attention to what he was saying. I was trying to pay attention to the lesson that the teacher, Mr. Lockler, was teaching us. But I could focus on that either. I was so anxious to talk to Chance. I wanted to know what I did to him, or what he thinks I did to him.
Finally, after my last class, I practically ran out the door from the class classroom. I had to get to the office. ‘Crap, the office! Where is that?’ I thought to myself. I was walking down the hall, trying to remember where Delilah told me it was. Take a left, take a right, I couldn’t think.
I was just standing there looking around, then there he was. Just like an angel. He walked over to me. I thought it was very convenient that he was there, as if he somehow knew I was going to get lost. But I didn’t want to ponder on that for long.
“Hey,” I said. “Sorry, I got kind of lost.”
“I thought you might.” he said, chuckling.” I mean, when you weren’t there, I came looking for you.”
“Yeah.” Then there was an awkward silence.
We just kind of sat there for a while, Staring around. Neither knowing what to say next. I was the one to break the silence.
“So, you wanted to tell me something. I have a couple questions.” I said bluntly.
“I have a couple answers.” he said, smugly.
“ What have I done to you? Have I offended you in someway? If I have, I am really sorry, I really am.” I said, in one breathe.
He stood there for a moment. Then spoke, “ No.”
That was it? That’s all he was going to say? No explanation for my question, just a simple, one word answer? No was all I was getting?
“No..? that’s it? Are you going to give some kind of answer more than that?”
“Yes.” he said. Then he looked like he was thinking hard about something. Then, “ I’m going to tell you a story. There was a boy by the name of Harrison Millerton, good boy, never did anyone any harm. Born in 1898, he was brought into a nice life. His parents were both around, his older bother looked out for him and his dad’s farm was growing great. He-”
Okay, what does this have to do with anything? Not to be rude..” I realized that I had interrupted him.
“Will you let me finish? Anyways, he was living good. Up until three days before his 18th birthday. He was out sitting by the creek out behind his house, reading a book under a big oak tree, enjoying life. So he was just sitting there, right? When all of a sudden he heard a low growl. When he looked up, there was a dog standing there, feet away from where he sat. As the dog moved closer, he realized it was too big to be a dog. It was a wolf, a very large one at that.
Still growling, and still moving closer, the wolf had its eyes locked onto Harrison’s gaze. Harrison was staring back. He noticed the unreal blue eyes of the wolf. No matter how hard Harrison tried to shake his gaze from the wolf, he couldn’t. It was like he was in a trance. Then, he finally was able to close his eyes. In his mind he whispered ‘Please God, don’t harm me!’
‘You wont feel much, just a sharp pain here and there, then you will be fine.’ said a voice said in his head.
He barely had time to look up at the wolf before he felt the sharp, excruciating pain that was told would come upon him. He fell backwards onto his back. The wolf had bitten into his flesh. He was waiting for the moment when he would be gone for forever. But that moment never came. He had realized the wolf wasn’t going to eat him like he thought. Once the pain of the bite had faded, he sat up and looked into the wolf’s eyes.
‘What? Are you not going to finish me off then you beast?’ he thought.
‘No. I’m going to stay here until your transformation is complete.’ said the wolf.
“Wait.” I said, sudden. “Transformation? What kind of story is this?”
“Will you please stop interrupting me? Let me finish and then you’ll understand.” Chance said, calmly.
“Okay” I said, still a little confused.
“Where was I? Oh yes, his transformation. They were there for a long while before they heard Harrison’s dad calling him. Before Harrison had a chance to yell back to his dad, the wolf had grabbed him by the back of the shirt and started running. They ran for, what felt like forever, before the wolf stopped. They were in a cave, from what Harrison could make out. He sat down and was suddenly swept over with tiredness. He fell to his side and passed out. When he finally woke up, he was starving.
He sat up and there was a man. He was tall, muscular. He had dark black hair, with streaks of grey in it. He had incredibly blue eyes, almost fake looking. Harrison stood up and waked over to the man.
“Who are you” he asked.
“I am Niccilo Raphallini. I brought you here tonight boy.” he said.
“No, you’re wrong sir, a wolf brought me here tonight, after trying to kill me”
“I did not try to kill you. I was saving you. And the reason I brought you here so you wouldn’t kill that man calling you.”
Harrison was a tad bit frightened hearing that.
“ No! you are a man, not a wolf. An wolf brought me here. And why would I have killed my father?” he was getting frustrated.
“No, my boy. I AM the wolf. You might want to sit down.” Niccilo said, pointing to the ground.
So, he sat, ready to hear the story he was about to be told.
“Now, my boy, I am a werewolf. I know that may sound a bit funny or even insane, but its true. I bit you, so now you are a werewolf. If I would have kept you there, your father would be dead. I am sorry to do that to you, but I have been watching you for a while now, and you are just what my army needs. You strong and smart. That’s rare, my boy, quite rare. Now, I’m sure your hungry so go out and find you some dinner. And remember, no humans!
“WHAT!?” Harrison screamed. He was s confused. “So, I’m a werewolf? I have questions! Can I go back to my family? What is going to happen to me? What do I eat?”
“Yes, you are a werewolf. No, you can not go back. Not until you can control yourself around human blood. You are going to fight with me and other werewolves against the Ginchets, a pack of werewolves from France. They are on a mass killing spree. They have to be stopped. And There are many forms of wildlife out here in this forest. Take your pick.” Niccilo said, as if this was no big deal.
“Okay.” was all Harrison could find to say. He looked out into the forest he was standing in front of.
“He all of sudden started running. Suddenly he wasn’t Harrison, he was a wolf. Four legs, a tail and a wet nose, he was a wolf. He ate well that night, a deer and he took a snap at a mountain lion, but that didn’t work. He returned back to the cave, still in his wolf form. He walked over to the wall of the cave and laid down, curled up and fell asleep. He slept well, surprisingly.
“The rest of his days were filled with training and war. He, along with three others, not including Niccilo, were the only ones to survive the war. The four of them stayed together for about a decade, or so. Then they went their separate ways.”
And then he Chance was done with his story.
“Wow.” that’s all I could really say at the moment. I was confused. What did any of that have to do with the way acted around me. The way he always stares at me like he wants to kill me. And then it hit me.
“Are-Are you a werewolf?” I asked. I realized what a complete idiot I sounded like, asking him if he was a werewolf.. Gosh, I’m such a loser. Then, he answered. “Yes.” just as simple as that.
It took me off guard. So, this angel was actually a damned wolf. I was surprised when I want scared. Any normal person, I assume would be running away in terror, but not me. I was still very calm. I know I should be scared, but I looked into his eyes, and saw no evil. No, I saw kindness.
“So, you’re a werewolf. Okay, well, now what?” I asked.
“ I don’t know. I didn’t plan for you to still be standing by me once I told you. I thought you might have run away or something.” he said. He sounded a little surprised.
I can’t say I wasn’t a little surprised myself.
“So, do you like, kill people?” I asked, I was so lame.
“No, but I have before. But I haven’t in a really long time.” he explained.
“Oh. Can I ask you a question then? Why do you hate me?” I asked.
“ I don’t hate you. You have to understand a few things first,” he glanced down at his watch. “Shoot. It’s getting late. I get going. Do you need a ride home?”
I haven’t even stopped to think that I had missed the bus. Yeah, I know, the bus. But I didn’t have a car, so what was I going to do?
“Yeah I do. Thanks.” I said.
So, we started walking to the student parking lot, towards his car. When we got to his car, he opened the door for me and I told him thank you and then sat down. ‘What a gentleman.’ I thought.
“Thanks” he said, with a smile. Then we closed the door and walked around the car and got in.
“ I forgot that you could do that.” I said, embarrassed.
After he got in the car, and tuned the radio station to some rock station, we backed out and started driving. We were picking up speed.
“Your going kind of fast.” I said.
“Oh, I don’t even notice I go so fast, I’m just used to it.” he said, and then slowed down, but not by much.
I still had so many questions, but none of them seemed relevant right now. Except one.
“Were you the wolf that is always behind my house looking at me and the one that came on my porch that day?”
He smiled. “Yes”
“Okay, just wondering.” I said, smiling, too.
Soon, we were in my drive way and Chance got out and opened my door for me. He walked me to my door and then told me he would see me tonight. He was so sweet.
So, I walked in my house and Mom was sitting on the couch waiting for me.
“Where have you been!?” she was frantic.
“I missed the bus. And I had to wait around for someone to give me a ride. Sorry, I meant to call.” I said, but I was still to happy that Chance didn’t hate me.
“Well, I’m glad your okay. Just call next time.” she said.
“Okay. I’m not really hungry and I have a lot of homework, so I’m going to upstairs and finish it up.”
“Okay honey.” then her eyes were glued to the T.V once more.
I walked up the stairs and into my room. Okay, so lied about homework, I actually didn’t have any. I mean, it’s the first day of school. So, I had to get ready to see Chance. If he was going to see me tonight, I wasn’t going to look a mess.
So, I jumped into the shower and shampooed and conditioned my hair.
By the time I got out, it was close to 6:30. I got dressed into my pajamas and went down stairs. There, I found Mom petting this huge dog.
“Look! Its he the sweetest thing ever?” she asked as she was petting it.
I looked at it and started smiling. As I stared, I saw a pair of gorgeous blue eyes staring back at me.
“We are keeping him.” mom said suddenly. I looked up at her.
“Okay.” I said, I was really excited. “I’ll take the big guy upstairs. Come on boy.” I started giggling.
But he followed. Up to my room we went. We both walked into my room and I sat down on the floor and he walked over and sat down and laid his head on my knee.
“ You are very sneaky, you know that?” I said to him. He opened his mouth and flopped his tongue to one side and started to make this sound, that sounded like he was trying to laugh.
‘Once your mom is asleep, I’ll switch that way we can talk better’ he said to me.
“Okay.” I said.
That took forever. She wasn’t going to going to come up anytime soon, so I turned on my T.V and started watching America’s Next Top Model, it was the only thing on. I turned my glance to Chance and he had fallen asleep on my bed. He looked so peaceful. I almost drifted to sleep, when Mom knocked on my door and came in.
“Hey. Aw, look at him. He is just the sweetest dog. Well, goodnight Stace.” and she walked out and closed my door.
I had watched her close the door, then turned my glance over to Chance. Only he was a human again sitting on my bed with a smile on his face. I tried to smile back, but my eyes were heavy and I was so tired. Then I heard is voice speak.
